Jan Van der Spiegel

Jan Van der Spiegel (Fellow IEEE) is a Professor and Deputy Chair of the Electrical and Systems Engineering Department, and the Director of the Center for Sensor Technologies at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr Van der Spiegel received his Master's and PhD from the University of Leuven, Belgium.

His primary research interests are in high-speed, low-power analog and mixed-mode VLSI design, biologically based sensors and sensory information processing systems, micro-sensor technology, and analog-to-digital converters. He is the author of over 150 journals and conference papers and holds 4 patents. Dr. Van der Spiegel co-founded Corticon, Inc, a company that aims to produce biologically inspired sensors and systems. His earlier work on chemical sensors led to the formation of Integrated Ionics, that was later renamed I-Stat. The company focuses on the development and manufacturing of sensors for medical diagnostics for blood analysis.

He was the recipient of the IEEE Third Millenium Medal, the UPS Foundation Distinguished Education Chair and the Bicentennial Class of 1940 Term Chair. He received the Christian and Mary Lindback Foundation, and the S.Reid Warren Award for Distinguished Teaching, and the Presidential Young Investigator Award. Dr Van der Spiegel is currently the programme secretary of the International Solid-State Circuit Conference (ISSCC), Chapters Chairs coordinator of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) and the editor of Sensors and Actuators A for North and South America. He is also a member of Phi Beta Delta and Tau Beta Pi.


Beth A. Winkelstein

Dr. Beth A. Winkelstein is an Associate Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania . She also holds an appointment in the Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Winkelstein received her BSE in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and earned a PhD from Duke University in Biomedical Engineering in 1999. She joined the faculty at Penn in 2002.

Dr. Winkelstein's research program is focused on understanding the mechanisms of painful neck and spine injuries, mechanical and cellular mechanisms of pain onset and persistence, CNS neuroimmune responses of pain, and defining the relationship between tissue injury mechanics and the physiology of pain.

Dr Winkelstein has published over 30 papers and 6 book chapters. Dr. Winkelstein has received research grants from the Whitaker Foundation, NSF, NHTSA, CDC, and NIH to support her work

Dr. Winkelstein's research has been recognized by awards from the Stapp Car Crash Conference and the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine. Dr. Winkelstein was awarded a Whitaker Young Investigator Award, an NIH Career Award, an NSF-CAREER award the Y C Fung Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, recognizing her as the most promising Biomedical Engineer in the country in 2006.

Susan S. Margulies

Susan S. Margulies, Ph.D. is a Professor of Bioengineering. A Summa cum Laude graduate of Princeton, she obtained her Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Penn and joined the Mayo Clinic in 1987.

She was recruited to Penn's faculty in 1993. Dr. Margulies is a recipient of the prestigious Whitaker Young Investigator and NSF CAREER Awards, and is funded by NIH, NSF, Dept of Transportation, and Centers for Disease Control for her research in ventilator-induced lung injury and head injuries in adults and children.

She published over 70 publications in biomechanics on her work using computational and experimental techniques to determine injury tolerances and mechanisms.

She serves on advisory panels for NIH, NSF, and CDC. Dr. Margulies is an outstanding teacher with great commitment to Bioengineering education. She was recognized for her teaching with the S.Reid Warren Jr. Award for stimulating and guiding the intellectual development of the undergraduate students in the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Chin-Hock (C.H.) Low
C.H. Low has 23+ years experience in software product management, software development and technology management in five startup and early stage companies. C.H. has been responsible for or involved in the development of numerous software products, online services and on-demand application service providers for consumers and corporations. His past experiences and responsibilities includes Product Management, Business/Product/Technology Strategy, Sales and Marketing, Product Analysis, Project Management, Software Development and Systems Operations.

As of April of 2006, C.H. Low is currently taking a temporary professional sabbatical. Part time, C.H. Low serves as a consultant in Technology Management and Business Strategy.

From July 2003-Apr 2006, C.H. Low was the Chief Technology Officer for StarCite Inc.

Prior to that, C.H. was the EVP of Strategic Development/Product Management, eMoney Advisor Inc., (www.emoneyadvisor.com). He joined the company as a member of the founding management team and helped to develop its business plan and financial projections to raise the initial venture funding; and recruited the product development staff. He was responsible for developing product strategy and corporate strategy, product management, product pricing; and corporate and business development relationships with vendors and partners.

From 1998-2001, C.H. was the Chief Technology Officer/VP of Technology Alliances and Integration at VerticalNet Inc. As CTO, he was responsible for the development and system operations of the software operating the B2B Online Marketplaces. As VP of Technology Alliances and Integration, he was responsible for the development of new products and B2B marketplaces through technology synergies from partners and vendors.

From 1988 until 1998, C.H. Low was the SVP Product Development and Engineering, Reality Online, Inc, a Reuters Company. He as responsible for the software development of several generations of financial planning, security research and information, and online trading software based on DOS, Windows, Macintosh and Internet platforms. He was also responsible for the Product Management of initial products (quotes, charts, historical prices, news, portfolio manager, etc) launched onto the Internet in 1995.

Prior to that C.H. Low was a co-owner in Gnosis Inc, which was a provider of a job-shop manufacturing control software system for small to medium sized manufacturers.

C.H. graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Management and Technology programme (Wharton and Engineering School) in May 1983. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics (Finance) and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Computer Science).
Marc Kramer
Marc Kramer is president of Kramer Communications that provides Internet strategic marketing, sales and communications, business plan development, and content service strategy and project management. He is also a project faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business Global Consulting Practicum and a professional speaker and lectures on topics such as Internet marketing, marketing, sales networking, corporate entrepreneurship and turning around distressed companies.

Marc is also the chief marketing officer of Expert Speakers (www.expertspeakers.net) which markets business professionals to trade associations and corporations to speak to their members and employees. Marc is a former partner at USWeb, the world’s largest Internet consulting firm, prior to that was president of Mixed Media Works, and an interactive company that produced such web sites for Rosenbluth International and CoreStates Bank among others.

Before joining MMW, Marc started the Eastern Technology Council, the second largest business technology council in the U.S., with over 1,000 corporate members. He also launched and ran Technology Times, the second largest business technology newspaper in the U.S.; the Pennsylvania Technology Transfer Center; the Institute of Biotechnology and Advanced Molecular Medicine; the Penn State Technology Development Center and the Pennsylvania Private Investors Group, the country’s first formally organized investor angels network.

Marc has also served as president/CEO of Business Philadelphia and Seven Arts, two large regional magazines.

Marc has received such awards as the Inc. Magazine Entrepreneur of the Year, American Electronics Association Spirit of America Award and was three years in a row named one of the Top Five Business Leaders Under Age 40 in Philadelphia region by the Philadelphia Jaycees and won the Small Business Journalist of the Year by the Center City Proprietors Association of Philadelphia in 2006.

Marc has been quoted in over 40 publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Success, Fortune, Forbes, Inc. Entrepreneur and The Philadelphia Inquirer. In 1993, Marc was featured on the cover of international business magazine Profit.

Marc is columnist for TheStreet.com, the world’s top online service for money managers , company leaders and individuals that manage their own money and is a columnist for Philadelphia’s third largest daily The Evening Bulletin.

Marc is a former trustee of Cheyney University, the oldest African American University in the U.S. and is on the board of the Entrepreneurs Forum of Philadelphia and the Technology Resource Alliance. Marc has a Master’s in Management from Penn State University and a BS in journalism from West Virginia University.
Eric Lee Smith
Eric Lee Smith, a pioneer in the development of new technology products and services for the financial services industry, joined InvestorForce in July 2005 as Vice President of Product Direction.

In his career, Smith has worked with a diverse group of clients that include: American Express; Credit Suisse First Boston; Ernst & Young; Fidelity Investments; Franklin Templeton; JP Morgan/Chase; Legg Mason; Morgan Stanley; PaineWebber; Quick & Reilly; Smith Barney Citigroup; and Vanguard. Prior to joining InvestorForce, Smith was President of Eric Lee Smith INNOVATIONS, LLC, a consulting firm he founded in 2003 that focused on designing financial services products, marketing plans and online technologies. Previously, Smith was the Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of Giving Capital, Inc. From 1996 to 1998, Smith was Vice President for Research and Development at Reality Online, Inc. (a division of Reuters PLC). He was Vice President of the Strategic Products Group at Reality Online from 1992-1994, and that company's Creative Director from 1988-1992. Smith's experience also includes his entrepreneurial ventures, which, in addition to Giving Capital, Inc., include a number of consulting firms.

Early in his career, Smith was a professional game designer for Simulations Publications and the Avalon-Hill game company. His first game, "The Alamo," was nominated for best war game of the year, and he later won that award twice, for "The Civil War" and "Ambush." A graduate of Pratt Institute, Smith earned the New Product Development Professional designation from the Product Development Management Association.
Boon Thau Loo

Boon Thau Loo is an Assistant Professor in the Computer and Information Science department at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 2006. Prior to his Ph.D, he received his M.S. degree from Stanford University in 2000, and his B.S. degree (highest honors) from UC Berkeley in 1999. His research focuses on distributed data management systems, Internet-scale query processing, and the application of database technologies to networked systems. He was awarded the 2006 David J. Sakrison Memorial Prize for the most outstanding dissertation research in the Department of EECS at UC Berkeley, and the 2007 ACM SIGMOD Dissertation Award. During his graduate studies, he collaborated closely with Intel Research Laboratory at Berkeley, was a visiting researcher at Microsoft Research Silicon Valley, and a visiting student at MIT. Boon Thau was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and grew up in Singapore where most of his extended family resides.

Rob Weber
Rob Weber has held a variety of executive positions for emerging technology companies. He is a Managing Director for Antiphony Partners LLC, a strategy consulting firm that helps companies create sustainable value through innovation.

Most recently, he served as President of Knoa, an e-learning software company, where he successfully redefined the corporate product strategy and repositioned the company to capitalize on new market opportunities. Prior to Knoa he served as President of Elastomeric Technologies, a leading electronic connector manufacturer. Prior to Elastomeric, Rob was on the founding team of electronic musical instrument manufacturer ENSONIQ, which was ultimately sold to Creative Labs.

Rob is a founder of Robin Hood Ventures and the Mid-Atlantic Angel Group Fund, both angel investment groups that fund emerging growth companies. Additionally, he serves as Senior Faculty Fellow in the Jerome Fisher programme in Management and Technology and as a lecturer at the Wharton School where he teaches technology strategy, business planning and entrepreneurial management. Rob earned Bachelor of Science in Economics (B.S.E.) and Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degrees from The Wharton School and School of Engineering at The University of Pennsylvania.

Prof Wong Poh Kam

Dr. Wong obtained two BSc.’s., an MSc. and a Ph.D. from MIT and currently holds joint Associate Professorship appointments at NUS Business School and LKY School of Public Policy. He concurrently serves as Director, Entrepreneurship Centre, NUS, where he oversees the strategic development of experiential education program in entrepreneurship, the formulation and implementation of various university technology commercialization and spin-off support programs (including incubators, seed funding scheme, entrepreneur mentoring, networking activities with venture investors, etc) as well as various general entrepreneurship promotion/outreach programs (including the StartUp@Singapore national business plan competition and entrepreneurship training workshops for working professionals). He also directs the centre’s research program on technology entrepreneurship and innovation strategy. He was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) by the Singapore Government in 2005.

He has published in numerous international journals on high tech industries, innovation strategy/policy and technology entrepreneurship, and is the lead researcher for Singapore in a number of major international collaborative research projects, including the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) study and the Stanford Project on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE). He is currently leading an 8-country comparative research project on Asian university technology commercialization funded a Japanese foundation. He has also consulted widely for international agencies (e.g. the World Bank and Asian Development Bank), various government agencies in Singapore (e.g. A*STAR, EDB, IDA, MPA), and many high tech firms in Asia.

An active angel investor with investment in Singapore, Silicon Valley, Malaysia and China, he is the founding chairman of Business Angel Network (Southeast Asia) as well as the founding chairman of BAF Spectrum Pte Ltd, an angel investment fund supported by SPRING Singapore. He is a board member of NUS Technology Holdings, and a panel member of The Enterprise Challenge (TEC) since 2004.
